I spent thirty years fixing systems. When a server crashes, you don't sit there and hold space for it; you write a patch, you reboot it, you rescue the data.
It turns out, if you do that long enough, you start treating human beings like servers. You look at a friend in crisis, or a company in a down economy, and your hands instinctively reach for the scalpel. You want to open them up, find the broken code, and patch it.
But people aren't servers. And the urge to rescue them is usually just our own inability to sit quietly in the room with their pain.
