In 2013, I had one of the best experiences of my life: teaching 6 teenagers how to make pictures (or, take photographs, if you like).
The students came to a 2-week workshop in Bangalore, India hosted by NuVu Studio in Cambridge, where I had been working primarily on technology-related projects. Two of the students were from NuVu, while the other 4 attended Parikrma Center for Learning in Bangalore. The Parikrma Humanity Foundation was started 15 years ago, with the collective desire to create a Sustainable Model of Equal Education for the under privileged and under-served children, who live in slums and orphanages in Bangalore. Of the latter group, none had ever done anything resembling photography.
In 2 weeks, we learned how to see by studying other photographers' work, and spent dozens of hours walking around Bangalore making pictures together.
The pictures you see here are the best of their efforts, and I think they are nothing short of amazing. I wish I had made many of these images!
While I already knew the students from NuVu, the 4 Indian children were typical teenage boys through-and-through, and were some of the most kind-hearted people I have met in my life. I am in touch with them to this day.
